Business continuity certifications, explained
'Certification' in business continuity means two different things: certifying an organisation's management system, and certifying an individual professional. Here's the map.
Organisation certification
- ISO 22301 — the international standard for a Business Continuity Management System; organisations are audited and certified by an accredited body.
Professional certifications
- CBCP (Certified Business Continuity Professional) and ABCP — from DRI International.
- MBCI / CBCI — from the Business Continuity Institute (BCI).
- ISO 22301 Lead Implementer / Lead Auditor — for those building or auditing a BCMS.
How to choose
If you're certifying your organisation, ISO 22301 is the target. If you're advancing your career, pick a professional certification (CBCP or CBCI) and pair it with hands-on experience running a real program.
Certifications prove knowledge; an exercised, evidenced program proves capability. You want both.
